About the Role

The Senior Market Manager (SMM), Retail leads multiple store locations in a market and reports to the Director, Retail Operations.

The SMM takes accountability for their team of managers and the retail operations of the stores in their market. They place a focus on people, motivating others to create a positive work experience for their teams, which generates great outcomes.

The SMM is accountable for multiple store locations within a designated market. Travel is required within the market; approximately 90% of the time is spent on the road visiting stores and team members.

Key Responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities of the Senior Market Manager include, but are not limited to, the following:

Leadership

  • Recruit, hire, train and manage the performance of market/store managers

  • Seek out, recognize, and address where improvements are needed to ensure a safe and happy work environment for all

  • Support successions plan by identifying and developing future leaders

  • Teach and challenge managers to delegate, engage and develop their own team members

  • Bring together, motivate, and foster a team environment across the market – encouraging connection and support of each other

  • Proactively deploy stress prevention and management techniques for team members

Retail Operations

  • Provide guidance, drive, and support to the team to meet key performance indicators (KPIs), deliver operational excellence and to achieve financial objectives

  • Develop and monitor budgets through data analysis, working with managers on interpreting and finding opportunities for financial success

  • Conduct store visits and produce reports for immediate action and decision making for stores and the market as a whole

  • Support managers to conduct regular inspections to ensure the presentation of a clean, upscale, and well-maintained establishment, ensuring stores are physically maintained, and resolving issues immediately

  • Support managers to accurately monitor inventories, monitor security standards, systems, equipment, and the flow of merchandise, seeking minimal shrinkage

  • Seek out and incorporate organizational best practices at market-level while ensuring regulatory and company standards and policies are upheld, developing strategies for improved processes and operations

  • Work with other internal teams in executing new store openings in the market as applicable

Accountability

  • Use knowledge and experience to offer and apply new ideas and strategies to proactively prevent challenges and to improve the business

  • Communicate clear expectations and monitor adherence to company standards and legislative compliance; teach and promote managers to hold themselves and their teams accountable

  • Support managers in their abilities to multi-task and meet planned timelines

  • Understand the Ren’s overall objectives; contribute to the success of the company by offering up and delivering upon innovative and realistic solutions

Customer Experience

  • Exemplify and promote others to demonstrate the Ren’s “carry-out” culture, values and brand to foster legendary customer experience throughout the market

  • Build team commitment to high standards of merchandising, service, exceeding customer expectations, and leading by example

  • Partner with internal teams to problem solve, generate, and deliver on ideas to adjust and/or make improvements

  • Curate and use networks to foster customer loyalty across the market

  • Effectively deal with serious customer issues and complaints, with tact and calm, always striving for mutually agreeable outcomes

Skills and Effort Requirements

  • Possesses effective motivational and communication skills particularly in the areas of leading others, retail operations and customer service

  • Possesses a proven track record of effectively managing a team in multiple locations

  • Demonstrates a solid commitment to health and safety, compliance, and continuous improvement

  • Strong organization, planning, and implementation skills

  • Able to create realistic schedules and meet deadlines under stress and interruptions

  • Excellent management writing and verbal communication skills

  • Solid understanding of KPI and financial reports including budgetary guidelines, payroll, and expenditures

  • Computer literacy, including effective working skills in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and e-mail required

  • Pet Retail experience an asset

Qualifications

  • 2 years multi-location retail management experience

  • High school education or equivalent
