ABOUT THE ROLE…

The Bone & Biscuit Co. is looking for a Controller to join our team on a 1-year temporary contract reporting to the Vice President, Finance and Administration.

The Controller is a critical member of the finance team. Working closely with internal and external partners, the Controller will assist the business through financial transformation. The Controller is responsible for financial records and reporting related to the main operating company and its corporate stores. Their focus will be on mentorship and support of the finance team and the quality of financial data and reporting produced by their team and the franchisee network. The Controller will support the company’s network of franchisees by providing initial and ongoing financial reporting guidance and analysis.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Analysis & Reporting

  • Consistently analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitor progress against budget and explain variances.

  • Report on business KPI metrics, dashboards, and/or ad-hoc requests related to operations.

Financial Management

  • Prepare monthly franchisee billing and pre-authorized debits.

  • Monitor lease accounts. Manage payment and reimbursement of lease deposits, annual adjustments, construction, and tenant improvement allowances.

  • Assist Corporate store managers with any questions or set-up regarding their respective payroll submissions. Review corporate store payroll submissions.

  • Manage benefit plan applications, payroll deductions, and reconciliations.

  • Authorize payments through expenditure approval and signing authority. Manage organizational cash flow forecasting by working in partnership with the organization’s leadership; continuously collaborating to assess the financial efficacy of program operations.

  • Prepare insurance information needed for applications/renewals, monitor expiries, and facilitate insurance requests.

  • Prepare closing entries, schedules, reconciliations, and financial reports.

  • Support year-end external audit; Preparation of working papers and information to support requests. Throughout the year, ensure compliance with all applicable plans, policies, and standards; stay current on industry trends, and best accounting and audit practices.


Leadership & Collaboration

  • Demonstrate ethical leadership and business integrity.

  • Provide leadership, mentoring and coaching to support staff.

You are highly organized, detail-oriented, and an excellent communicator who thrives in a growth-oriented environment. YOU HAVE…

Skills, Knowledge, & Experience

  • CPA designation is preferred

  • 4+ years’ progressive experience in finance. Public accounting experience with transition to industry considered an asset.

  • Experience in retail, franchise operations, or consumer goods is an asset.

  • Experience negotiating vendor contracts is an asset.

  • Experience with full-cycle accounting and reporting.

  • Demonstrated success in managing strategic partner relationships.

  • Experience coaching and mentoring teams to high performance.

  • Strong data collection, analysis, and presentation skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Detail-oriented, accurate and well-organized.

  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite; Expert level Microsoft Excel skills; Aptitude in QuickBooks Online; POS system knowledge is considered an asset.
